Posted by: andrewmcd on: October 22, 2009

The Juice festival for young people in Newcastle gets under way today. Sadly, we have never managed to get along to any of the events last year (and we wont get there this year either!) – we have heard from friends of ours that is is always some great stuff happening.

Juice is now into its second year, and is esentially a two-week series of events celebrating the creativity of children and young people. There are events, performances, activities and entertainment taking place across the city from today until the 8th of November.

Here’s some footage from the Parkour events of last year:

For the full series of events taking place, check out the full programme on the Juice homepage.

For those looking to travel to Newcastle and need somewhere to stay – the Village Newcastle Hotels are a great option.

Double Featured Bedroom in the Ramada Jarvis Mount Royal Hotel in Edinburgh

Ramada Jarvis Bedroom in EdinburghRamada Jarvis Bedroom in Edinburgh

I stayed at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Edinburgh the other week their when I was at the Edinburgh Tattoo and Fringe Festival. I am sure I done a post about the Tattoo but I thought it would be worth while pitching in about the bedrooms in Ramada Jarvis.

We stayed in one of the Double Featured rooms. I don’t why they call them that but I do know they are a step up from the standard double rooms. The rooms where very stylish and fresh, decorated in a contemporary manner but I suppose all top hotels style their rooms this way nowadays. The linen on the bed was nice crisp and fresh, the pillows and covers where comfortable and soft. It was one of those places you go and it does exactly what it says on the tin – no disappointments.

Once again the en-suite bathroom was clean and fresh – well at least until I got in it:-). Now it is hard for me to say what I liked more in my short stay surroundings, out the window we had lovely vies of the Princess Street and could also see a good proportion of Edinburgh Castle but I have to admit the flat screen TV swung it for me. I do like my telly and with movies and internet access I was never twiddling my thumbs when in my room.

The Tardis journey contiues with Dr Who

The Tardis journey contiues with Dr Who

The latest incarnation of Doctor Who has been running on the BBC for over 4 years now, and its phenomenal success and popularity shows no signs of abaiting. First Christopher Ecclestone then David Tennant have taken on the Sonic Screwdriver mantle – and next year a new, younger Doctor will take over, Matt Smith, and a new Assistant.

What many people still may not realise is that Doctor Who (and its spin-offs Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures) are all filmed mostly in the Welsh city of Cardiff.

Seeing the Dr Who sites

You can pick up a map with all the major filming locations from the series, and combine this with a visit to the excellent Dr Who Up Close Exhibition where you can see a great selections of the aliens, monsters, costumes and props from the series – including the Doctors most notorious enemies the Daleks and Cybermen.

After you’ve had a Dr Who fix, you can then enjoy the many sites of Cardiff itself, including Cardiff Bay and The Millenium Stadium. The Village Hotels Cardiff are an excellent option for a stay in the Welsh capital.

Burton on Trent Tourist Destinations

Burton on Trent Church

Burton on Trent Church

Burton on Trent is the hub of the British brewing industry. It is the biggest town in Britain’s national forests. Running through the town you have the Mersey canal, Trent canal and the River Trent.

Back in the nineteenth century the Lord at the time (Michael Bass) gifted Burton on Trent with quite a few delightful buildings, with the most spectacular of them all being the Town Hall. Other prominent structures of his era are the gorgeous ST. Paul’s and the ST. Margaret’s church. One of the most acknowledged Gothic architect buildings in the UK is the St. Modwen’s parish church. This impressive site dates back to the 7th century when the first Christian settlements where found in Burton on Trent. This is where they built the Gothic church back in the 18th century and dedicated it to the founder of the Christian worshipers of the time.

The Coors visitor center will take you through back in time, show you how the brewing of beer was done back in the day, all ancient techniques are on show here from historic vehicles to horse drawn machines. The Coors visitor center in Burton on Trent is also a great day out for the kids, with there being interactive shows and outdoor play areas to keep them occupied.

Accommodation in the area ranges in price, depending on what you are looking for! Burton on Trent Hotels are mostly bed and breakfasts and country retreats.

Manchester Hotel Boom with Champions League Football

Champions League

Champions League

It’s nearly that time again. The start of the football season is just around the corner and its not only the fans who are licking there lips at the prospects of the worlds best teams coming to four of Britain’s largest cities. Glasgow, London, Manchester and Liverpool will get a share of the spoils from visiting fans from teams such as AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Lyon and the current holders Barcelona.

With the success of Manchester United over the last two decades – no other area in the UK or possibly Europe and beyond has experienced a steady rise in growth like hotels near Manchester united stadium when the Champions league is in town.

Manchester Hotel entrepreneur’s must now feel like they have won the lottery now that Manchester City has been taken over by the Trillion-air oil tycoon Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. It has not happened yet and there is no guarantee that it will happen but I think Manchester City will be in the champion’s league in the next two to three years – tops.

Many don’t like the way Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan is splashing his cash but nobody blinked an eyelid when Real Madrid spent £80 million on one player and I think in  a year or two most will have accepted that Manchester City can do to.

Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport is on the way up; once again they are leading when it comes to innovation. Being built as we speak is a new baggage handling system that runs under the airfield and will allow Heathrow to handle up to 110,000,000 bags per annum by the year 2010. The £260 million pound project will be 1.8kms in length and is being bored by a £3.3m tunnel boring machine as we speak.
On top of other new projects are the openings of numerous Heathrow Airport hotels that have been created to keep up with demand in the area. They are listed below.

  • Ramada Jarvis Heathrow
  • Sofitel London Heathrow
  • Hilton Heathrow (under construction)

These three top hotel chains will add to a wide selction of accommoadtion already in the area.

  • EasyHotel
  • Arora Hotel
  • Yotel

Now Heathrow has a slection of hotels that will offer a wide range of tastes and budgets to  suit all needs.
